One interpretation for this proverb is that it underscores the value which we place on family, customs and traditions, and our origin. As is often said, if you fail to discover where you came from, it will be difficult to figure out where you are going.
Another way to see the proverb is that it reminds us of the need to undertake critical evaluation and analysis in order to discover why certain things (good or bad) are happening in our lives. Only through such process would we be able to take corrective measures or keep on the same path as may be needed.
