The children’s book “My Sister, My Friend: Growing up with my sister in West Africa” (ReadersMagnet; 2019) by Sophia Blankson will be exhibited at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books 2020 on October 3 – 4, 2020 at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA.
The Festival of Books was first held in 1996 and since then has become an essential part of Los Angeles’ cultural and educational scene. The annual, free public festival attracts approximately 150,000 visitors. The event holds author panels, book signing sessions, storytelling, musical performances, culinary classes, and more. Aside from books, new and original works of art and photography will also be on display.
“My Sister, My Friend” is illustrated by the author’s niece, Sophia Opoku, and is dedicated to all children throughout the world who are struggling with relationships. The book tells the story of the author’s happy childhood growing up with her sister in West Africa.
“The other day I was watching a talk show about sibling rivalry and my heart felt the pain of the kids who are trying to kill each other just because of the petty differences in them,” said Blankson in the preface of her book. “I had a wonderful childhood experience and I am still very close to my siblings.”
The author hopes that “My Sister, My Friend” will help readers appreciate their siblings and assist parents in dealing with sibling rivalry “before it becomes a bigger problem.”
“Let the children know that it is okay to be different from the other children in birth order, gender, looks, ability to learn and do things, etc. Just let the differences be the bond that will help make the other better too.”
