From 23 to 26 March, 2022, the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) will organize in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), the final phase of the cross-regional co-production twinning workshop on disasters risk reduction. The workshop scheduled to take place in Mauritius Island’s Voilà Bagatelle Hotel is held under the chairmanship of the United Nations Office for Disasters Risk Reduction (UNDRR). It comes against the backdrop of a two-year Intensive Training Program (ITP) initiated in 2019 by Member Organizations of the World Broadcasting Unions (WBU).
The Pilot phase of the program was launched on 11 January 2021 with online classes involving broadcasters from Benin, Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, the Gambia, Guinea Conakry, Kenya, Mauritius Island, Malawi, Nigeria, Niger, Tanzania, Togo and Zimbabwe. The second edition which took place in February 2022 brought together participants from Kenya, Botswana, Cameroon, the Gambia, Uganda, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and Comoros.
The online classes aimed at raising awareness among media professionals on the implications of the climate and the related sustainable development challenges, in particular those concerning countries exposed to human induced disasters and natural disasters like landslides, cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, firestorms. Trainees were provided with an accurate overview of the international legal framework and other international bodies operating in this field of climate change. Capacity-building workshops were also opportunities to strengthening journalists’ reporting skills about climate change issues and adaptation.
From 23 to 26 March 2022 in Port-Louis, Trainers will to evaluate participants on the changes and the difficulties encountered in the implementation of Disasters Risks Reduction related concepts in their newsrooms. One of the central problems of our current time in the broadcasting industry being production, participants will be expected to co-produce workshops and discuss pressing concerns.
