A Nigerian-American man who recently relocated to Nigeria after many years abroad has launched a new domestic airline in the country. Mr. Babawande Afolabi received praises for launching his startup airline called Green Africa Airways.
The airline took delivery of aircrafts for its fleet and plans to begin passenger operations in major cities of Nigeria. According to information on Bloomberg, Green Africa Airways was founded in 2015 and registered under transportation and logistics sub-industry category. And according to Black Enterprise, it placed an order for some aircrafts after reaching “an agreement with Boeing for some 737 MAX 8 aircraft”.
On May 14, 2021, the company announced that it has taken delivery of a new aircraft with registration number ZS-ESS/5N-GAA and is set to commence commercial operations to Nigerian cities of Enugu, Abuja, Ilorin, Owerri, Port Harcourt, among others.
Mr. Babawande Afolabi is from Nigeria’s well-known city of Ile-Ife and holds a degree in Political Science and Economics from Illinois Wesleyan University in the United States. For several years before venturing into the airline business, he worked as a venture investment expert in the United States.
Hopefully, Mr. Babawande’s success story will encourage and motivate other African professionals in the diaspora to return home and contribute to Africa’s development.
