Experts and financiers are meeting in Cape Town, South Africa from April 21-22, 2020. It is for the African Hydropower Forum. It is a conference that will examine advances in hydropower production in Africa.
Hydropower is one of the most exploited renewable energy sources in Africa. Major hydropower projects are in the pipeline on the continent. From Nigeria to Ethiopia to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), some African governments are banking on their hydropower potential to meet the challenge of access to electricity.
But the exploitation of this source of energy faces environmental challenges. Worse still, African hydropower facilities are suffering the full impact of climate change. This is one of the issues that will be on the agenda of the African Hydropower Forum. It is a conference to be held from the 21st to the 22nd of April 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa.
The event will host 18 speakers from several countries and industries involved in the development of hydropower projects. The exchanges between these actors will revolve around the climate issues that are hampering the development of hydropower. These are particularly drought which has as its main effect the reduction of river flows and thus the level of the dams used to operate hydropower plants.
The discussions will also address the potential and opportunities for development, cross-border collaboration, multipurpose developments, as well as the technical, environmental and financial challenges posed by the hydropower sector in all regions of the African continent. The conference will be broadened to cover related topics, including civil works and harsh conditions; hydrology and flood and drought management; hydropower technology, environmental and social aspects, and other important issues facing the sector.
